Easter 2025 Update

Dear Member,

Following a lovely dry March and beginning of April, Easter has crept up on us without us hardly noticing, and we are ever hopeful for a dry bank holiday weekend now the rain finally seems to have stopped. That said, the warm sunny weather has given many of us in Newport the opportunity to catch up on outstanding jobs.

Meanwhile, the team at the club have been busy preparing for the summer making sure clubhouse and our fleet of boats are ready in time for hopefully a busy season.

I am delighted to say our campaign to find more volunteer support has proven fruitful and the management committee has grown to a total of eleven. Our three new members of the Committee, Hal Grim, Steve Penn and Ed Will live locally and all are keen rowers. They also bring a range of skills in computing, health and safety and communications which will bring much needed knowledge to the Committee.

On the rowing front there is new impetus and enthusiasm to get things going and the boats have already been out on the water several times. Rowers are returning to the Club and new members are also joining from the local area which is most encouraging.

While there may be some informal sailing this weekend, organised activities will start at the beginning of May, with a practice day on Saturday 3rd and then races on 4th and 5th. The first of the Midweek series will be on Friday 9th, and then more activity on 17th/18th and 24th/25th.

We do need more volunteers to help run these races and provide safety cover, and we will subsidise training for people willing to help. Please get in touch for more details if you are interested.

The exciting news for Easter is the arrival of Brwnt, and the return of Coney Island Ice cream, who will be providing the outside catering for the summer. Brwnt, is Lydia Taylor, well-known local chef. Between them they will be offering a range of delicious food, ice cream and fresh coffee, throughout the summer season. We are sure you will give them both your fullest support.

The main maintenance project this year is to resolve the damp in the walls of the Commodores Lounge. The plan is to inspect the joists and rafters in the lean-to roof for safety and then repoint and seal the south and west facing walls which have not been done for many years. Once this has been done, the walls will hopefully dry out and the lounge can be repainted and the sounding proofing replaced. The work is planned for September straight after the August Bank holiday and therefore with the minimum interruption to the summer programme.

As I am sure you are aware, next year is the 50th anniversary of the Club and a committee of members are meeting regularly to put together a programme to celebrate this event. All members are more than welcome to offer their support and ideas. Feel free to contact our bar manager, Clare Evans at the Club.

Finally, may we wish you a Happy Easter.

From all the Team at the Club
