Autumn 2024 Update
Dear Member,
As the leaves fall from the trees and we are busy preparing for winter, it is a time of the year when the Boat Club is at its quietest. It is also a time when we start to reflect on the management and organisation of the club and start planning for the next year.
It is understood that much of the last twelve months was given to understanding and getting to grips with the running of the club. Although it was not the best summer for weather, the Club was busy both on and off the water. Nevertheless, not everything ran to plan and there remains more than plenty to do to get the Club steering in the right direction.
Since the AGM, we are pleased to say that Gareth Davies has been co-opted onto the Board as Treasurer. Gareth is a qualified chartered accountant currently working for a local manufacturing company with locations around the world. Living locally, Gareth will provide the club with useful financial knowledge & expertise. We are also delighted that Simon Reeves has agreed to be co-opted back onto the Board as Company Secretary, a post he held on an acting basis last year. Every effort is being made to strengthen the Management Committee with a range of expertise both on and off the water to provide our members with a Club fit for the future.
Nevertheless, members cannot expect the Management Committee to give all of their time to the club especially when many of them are in full time employment or engage in a range of other voluntary activities.
Volunteering – Supporting your Club
To address the need for more support, however large or small, we are instigating an initiative to grow our volunteer base.
On Tuesday 26th November between 6:00pm and 8:00pm, there will be a Volunteer Recruitment Evening
This evening will be an opportunity for you, to come to the club and meet members of the management team to learn more about the running of the club and see where you may be able to give a little of your time either on or off the water.
There are a range of opportunities to become involved in, such as:
ü Joining the Board and bring your ideas and expertise to the Management Committee.
ü Joining the 50th Anniversary Committee. The Club was founded in 1976, and we need a team to produce ideas, plan and execute a programme of events for this special year.
ü Making available your personal expertise to the club especially in such areas as Human Resources, Public Relations, Health and Safety, legal and property matters.
ü Supporting our on-water activities involving sailing, rowing and paddling.
ü Providing safety cover for our events as part of our power boating safety group
ü Helping at events such as our Open Day and Dinas Head Challenge.
ü Helping maintain the facilities in and around the Clubhouse.
Even if you are unable to attend the event on the 26th November, please let us know how you may be able to support the club in any way possible.
We are fully aware that many members do not live in the vicinity of the club, but that does not preclude you from being involved in some way, so feel free to tell us what you are able to do.
Year End Accounts
We are pleased to confirm that the financial accounts for the year ending 31st March 2024 have been agreed and accepted by the Board. The valuation of the clubhouse has now been resolved so there will be a General Meeting shortly for the members to accept the accounts and appoint the accountants.
Up and coming events
Thursday 21st November – Come down for our delicious Food and Drink Quiz! £5 per team, max. 6 per team. 7.30pm start.
Autumn International Rugby – we will be showing the Welsh games on the big screen in the members bar on request.
Meanwhile, we look forward to seeing
you and your family
at Newport Boat Club over the coming months.
With best wishes
The Commodore and all the Team at Newport Boat Club
