Commodores newsletter End June 2023

Dear member,

The AGM this year is on Thursday 24th August 18.30hrs in the Commodore’s lounge. You will shortly be receiving the notice and procedures for nominations for Management Committee.

Having given two years as Commodore, one as Vice- Commodore, and a couple before that working for the management Committee, I will not be standing for re-election to the management Committee at the next AGM. I find I can no longer give the time to our Club that I have to date, so the time has come for me to step aside for others to take the Club on the next stage of its journey.

I encourage members to consider what they could bring to the management of NBC, and to contact any committee member, face to face or by e-mail if you wish to find out more about the voluntary work of the management Committee; it is vital to the running of your Club. See the website here for further information and contact details https://www.newportboatclub.co.uk/committee

The annual, epic, NBC hosted Welsh Sea Rowing race the ‘Dinas Head Challenge’ is next Saturday 1st July, subject to sea conditions. This year, crews will start from lower town Fishguard, and boats will be finishing at the club from around 6.15pm. There will be music from 5:00pm to 7:00pm by Lewis Laurance, with our usual food offers, and the first of our summer BBQ nights.

Our summer food offering by Pasta a Mano and Cooney Island Ice cream, is expanding as we will also be offering burgers and buns supplied by Carla Thomas of Cig Lodor. Carla Thomas and her sons, Geraint and Berwyn will be running a BBQ on Friday and Saturdays throughout the summer months from 5:00pm. The family run a farm with a herd of Dexter cattle and have a farm shop situated on the road to Rosebush as you come up from the Gwaun Valley.

Our members bar opening times are now:

Monday to Thursday 4.30 pm to 9pm

Friday 4.30pm to 10.00pm

Saturday 12 noon to 10pm

Sunday 12 noon to 9pm.

*Staff may close earlier if no trade.

If you’ve not visited our new website, please do take a look, you will find lots of information including annual tide tables: https://www.newportboatclub.co.uk/ The web cam will be up and running again, post vandalism,  just as soon as we receive the new bracket to re-site it.

This just leaves me to thank you, for both supporting and enjoying your club, Newport Boat Club.

 With all best wishes

Niki South
